I am not anti-AI. To be honest, there is AI content I have enjoyed, found impressive, and even found entertaining. Dancing AI babies still get me to stop and watch. But I want to know what I’m looking at or listening to before I give it my time. This isn’t about AI tools. This isn’t about technology that assists with editing, workflow, or production. I’m talking about fully AI-generated content — video, audio, music, or media created by a machine
In my opinion, we are witnessing the birth of a new genre:
AI-Generated Music.
AI-Generated Film.
AI-Generated Media.
Genres exist to help audiences find what they like — and avoid what they don’t. If someone is a fan of AI-generated content, I think that’s great. They should know exactly where to go. But if someone isn’t, they should have the option to opt out. Right now, I find myself going to the comments section to see if people are calling something AI. Then I have to decide for myself whether what I just watched was AI-generated or not. Time is finite. Our attention has value. My engagement is real, even when the content is not. When I spend my time and emotions watching a video of a lion attacking people on an African safari, I don’t want to discover later that the entire thing was fake. Had I known, I would have chosen differently
We already accept this principle in other areas. Food companies list ingredients so consumers can decide what to eat. Yellow Dye #5, also known as Tartrazine, is a choice we all make. Music carries parental advisory labels so parents can make informed decisions. Advertising requires disclosure when content is sponsored. None of these rules ban products. They protect choice.
AI content doesn’t need restrictions. It needs a label: Fully AI-Generated I think that’s enough
As of today, there are proposals in the U.S. Congress, but they still appear to be in committees or awaiting votes. Nothing has passed both chambers or been signed into law. I’m happy there is awareness and interest, but no final mandate has been made. Let AI exist as its own category. Let it develop its own fans, its own aesthetics, and its own culture. And let everyone decide, upfront, whether that’s where they want to spend their time.
